Overview
What changes after pregnancy
A lot of moms describe the same things: a lower belly pooch that won't flatten, loose or crepey skin, stretch marks, and a midsection that still looks rounded even after the baby weight is gone. Some also notice a ridge or bulge down the middle of the stomach when they sit up.
Why exercise can't close the gap
That bulge is often diastasis recti, where the two vertical abdominal muscles pull apart during pregnancy and don't fully come back together. Core work can strengthen the area, but it can't stitch a true separation closed, and it can't remove skin that's been stretched past the point of bouncing back.
How a tummy tuck helps
Dr. Kim performs abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) to bring the separated muscles back together, remove loose skin, and create a flatter, firmer stomach. Stretch marks on the skin below the belly button often come out with it. Liposuction is commonly added to refine the waist and flanks.
Some women pair a tummy tuck with a breast lift or breast augmentation in the same surgery, which is often called a mommy makeover.
Timing matters
It's best to wait until you're done having children, finished breastfeeding, and at a weight you can maintain. Another pregnancy can stretch the muscles and skin all over again.
Recommended Treatment
Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) is a cosmetic surgical procedure that helps flatten the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin. It also tightens the muscle. The best candidates for an abdominoplasty are non-smokers who are in good physical condition and at a stable weight. They will also have pockets of fat or loose skin that has not responded well to diet and exercise. Abdominoplasty is an appropriate procedure for slightly obese people who have lost elasticity in their skin and for women whose skin and muscles have been stretched from pregnancy. Women who are planning to have more children or anyone planning on losing a significant amount of weight should wait before undergoing an abdominoplasty. Many patients undergo an abdominoplasty after pregnancy or bariatric surgery.
