Overview
What a monolid is
A monolid is an upper eyelid without a visible crease. It's a natural, common feature, especially among people of East Asian descent, and it isn't a medical problem. Some people choose to create a crease to define the eye, make makeup easier, or match an eye that already has a crease on one side.
Why some lids have no crease
A crease forms where fibers from the lifting muscle attach to the eyelid skin. In a monolid, there are fewer of those attachments, and there's often a bit more fat in the upper lid, so the skin folds smoothly without a line.
How Dr. Kim creates a crease
Dr. Kim performs Asian eyelid (double eyelid) surgery with either an incisional technique or a non-incisional suture technique. Which one fits depends on your skin thickness, how much fat is in the lid, and how defined and permanent you want the crease to be. He designs the crease height and shape, whether an inside fold that tapers toward the nose or a parallel crease, around your eye shape and face.
Keeping it natural
The most attractive results enhance your eyes rather than Westernize them. A crease set too high tends to look artificial, so Dr. Kim favors a conservative design. If you're unhappy with a previous eyelid surgery, double eyelid revision may help.
